Watch some of our rescued turkeys enjoy being the guests on honor at our annual feast for human and feathered friends!
While the majority of animals raised for food in the U.S. spend their lives on factory farms, the search for “humane” alternatives is a growing trend among consumers. In Marnie’s case, her “owner” was raising her and four other turkeys for meat at home.
These “backyard birds” didn’t live on a factory farm, and they were spared some industrial cruelties such as debeaking. But that didn’t make their situation a good or healthy one. Marnie suffered multiple issues as a result of improper care, and she was dying by the time she arrived at Farm Sanctuary.
Everything changed for these birds when their “owner” went through a breakup and moved away, leaving them behind in his former girlfriend’s care. Thankfully, she could not bear the thought of slaughtering them as had originally been planned, and she contacted Farm Sanctuary instead.
Now, for the first time, Marnie is learning what it’s like to be treated as someone, not something — and she’s serving as an ambassador for other turkeys just like her. Safe at our New York Shelter, she is free to be herself: assertive and sassy, always letting the other turkeys and her caregivers know just who’s in charge! We are thankful to celebrate Marnie’s first Thanksgiving with her this year, and honored to share how rich our lives can be when we put compassion first.
With your support, we can make a difference for turkeys and all farm animals. By sponsoring a turkey this holiday season, you help us provide the care our rescued residents need to thrive, and allow us to extend our lifesaving rescue, education, and advocacy work to help even more individuals in need. Thank you for supporting Farm Sanctuary as we create a more compassionate world for all!
