Watch some of our rescued baby turkeys enjoy the outdoors for the first time!
This year marks Marshall’s debut in Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt A Turkey Program – but this charismatic boy made his big entrance into our hearts three years ago, after an accident led Marshall to the life of stardom he knew he deserved! Sadly, Marshall was almost denied the right to live free from harm, as the incredible ambassador for his species he is today. A Broad Breasted White turkey, Marshall was bred for one purpose: to become a fleeting meal – the life behind it unrecognized and invisible. He was debeaked at a young age and bred to rapidly reach “market weight” within just a few short months. Crammed with thousands of other birds in a warehouse-like building, Marshall only sought to be recognized and valued as an individual – and not just another ghost in the factory-farming machine.
Coincidentally, a documentary unearthing the atrocities that animals like Marshall face every day wound up being his salvation. National Shelter Director Susie Coston just happened to be at the New York City premiere of The Ghosts in Our Machine, a film detailing the lives of animals whose voices sadly go unheard – and the inspirational journeys that take place when these beings are recognized. Suddenly, Susie got an urgent call about a turkey who had just fallen from a truck on the way to a live market nearby. Without missing a beat, she rushed to Marshall’s aid. Susie immediately fell in love with this gregarious turkey, who appeared relatively unscathed despite this tragic event. Marshall enticed Susie with his curious, friendly personality, and the two chatted all the way home to our New York Shelter.
We decided to name him Marshall in honor of Ghosts director Liz Marshall, whose film has opened so many people’s eyes about the rich, emotional lives of farm animals. And finally, Marshall can be acknowledged as the brilliant individual we know him to be – and he serves as inspiration to help countless other beings just like him.
With your support, we can make a difference for turkeys and all farm animals. By sponsoring a turkey this holiday season, you help us provide the care our rescued residents need to thrive, and allow us to extend our lifesaving rescue, education, and advocacy work to help even more individuals in need. Thank you for supporting Farm Sanctuary as we create a more compassionate world for all!
Since 1986, Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt a Turkey Project has encouraged people to save a turkey during the holiday season through sponsorships that help us rescue animals and provide care for them at our sanctuaries, as well as educate and advocate for turkeys and other farm animals everywhere.
For a one-time donation gift of just $30, anyone can sponsor a turkey. As a turkey sponsor, you will receive a special Adopt a Turkey certificate with a color photo of and fun details about your new friend.
Turkey sponsorships also make perfect gifts, so make an even greater impact this holiday season by sharing the love with others.
